This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

March 27th, 2011 to April 2nd, 2011I am writing this week's update from Regina, Saskatchewan, where I am all this week on a business trip. It's snowing lightly outside; better outside than inside, that's for sure. Living on the West Coast of Canada, we get quite spoiled. It doesn't snow often in the winter in Vancouver and when it does it is rarely much of an accumulation. Regina is a different story; they get lots of snow and very cold temperatures in winter. I will be pleased to be back home in time for next week's show.

We have been having some ongoing technical issues with our Real Media LIVE feed. The Archive has not been affected, as our webmaster, Eddy Fisher, has done his magic making the Real Media Archive sound great. In the next couple of weeks we will be making a decision as to whether we cancel the LIVE Real media feed altogether. If we do, please know that there will still be an Archive of the show in Real Media. Fortunately, the Windows Media live stream is sounding great. I'll keep you informed of the progress we make and the final decision.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Tom Locke, the creator and writer of our weekly feature, Moment In Time. Also Happy Birthday to Rich Howe in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. It was great hearing from his wife, Kitten, with her special request to play Spiral Staircase and More Today Than Yesterday. If you have a birthday coming up, I'd like to help celebrate it with all the Treasure Island Oldies listeners. Send the details of your birthday to mailto:birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com?subject=Birthday%20Wishes. I'll then wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play our official birthday song for you, Birthday by The Beatles.

Be sure to join us for our next Annual Special on April 10, 2011. It's the One Hit Wonders Special, and yes again, there are enough One Hit Wonders, artists who had a big hit on the charts, but were never able to repeat that initial success. When you hear some of the songs, you'll be thinking to yourself, "How is it that they never had another hit. This song is so good!". If there is a song by an artist who only had one hit record that you'd like to hear, be sure to let me know. Click the Requests button on any page of the website, or call the 24/7 Listener Line at 206-339-0709 to record your voicemail greeting and song request. I look forward to hearing from you.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the Flaming Ember from Detroit, Michigan. They were signed to Hot Wax Records, a label started by the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, who defected from Motown Records to start both the Invictus and Hot Wax labels. Westbound #9 is our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds with Don't Pull Your Love and Falling In Love (Again). Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.
It brings me back to the transistor radio era all over again! I'm having a blast showing friends and colleagues how cool it is to be able to listen to the show via a smartphone, and in my case my iPhone. If you own a smartphone, this is for you. You  can now listen to the live show Sunday nights as well as the Treasure Island Oldies 24/7 Stream on your smartphone (Android,  iPhone or  Windows). WunderRadio is the app you need to buy; and reasonably priced at only $6.99. You can get the app at WunderRadio.com. Here's the link for the live stream: http://meta.insinc.com/treasure/treasure.asx. And this is the link for the 24/7 Stream: http://treasureislandoldies.com/ContinuousTIO_2.asx.Let the world know you're a proud listener of Treasure Island Oldies. Send in your name, photo, city and province or state for the Listener Gallery to mailto:michael@treasureislandoldies.com?subject=Listener%20Gallery and our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, will post it on the Listener Gallery page along with the many already received.

You can also let all your friends know you enjoy the show with your personal Treasure Island Oldies Email Signature. A selection of complimentary signatures to be placed at the end of your outgoing emails is available for download. Click Goodies on the upper menu on any page on the website. Thanks to the many folks that have downloaded their own copy of the Email Signature. That's great!

I hope you have a great week and see you next Sunday for the live show.

Bye for now.

Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds - Voice Your Choice

Although their name could have been suggested the name of a law firm, Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds were actually a pop vocal trio. Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds were originally members of The T-Bones who had a huge instrumental hit, No Matter What Shape You Stomach's In, which was first used as a TV commercial jingle for Alka Seltzer. Reynolds left the group in 1972, but they continued to use the group's full name until July 1976 when Alan Dennison joined and they then became Hamilton, Joe Frank and Dennison.

In the relatively short time they appeared on the Billboard charts, they scored eight singles, with two in the Top Ten and both Gold records.

This week on Voice Your Choice on Treasure Island Oldies, we feature Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds with two of their biggest hits: Don't Pull Your Love and Fallin' In Love (Again). To vote for the song you prefer, come to the Voice Your Choice page and make your selection. The song with the most votes will be played in Hour 3 of this week's show.

Flaming Ember - Song of the Week

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing a great Detroit R&B Rock group that many assumed was black. Such was not the case. Here are Flaming Ember with one of their hit songs, Westbound #9. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

Week of March 20th, 2011 to March 26th, 2011

I always look forward to our annual Name Game Special on the show, and this year was no exception. It is amazing just how many songs have been recorded in the '50s, '60s, and '70s with someone's first name in the song title. You might think it would be difficult to prepare a four hour show with just "name" songs. Actually, you'd be surprised at how many songs I couldn't fit into the show. Yes, there's that many. We'll do it all over again next year with a new batch of Name Game songs. And thank you very much for your comments via email and in the chat room and how much you enjoyed hearing all those great songs. It was also fun to play a couple of "name" songs during the Spot Dance near the end of the show. It's fascinating how there could be two, three or even four versions of the same song on the chart at the same time. So I decided to play the not heard every day version of Debbie Reynolds' Tammy by the Ames Brothers; and instead of the Teen Queens, I played The Chordettes' version of Eddie My Love. Both were significant hits at the same time, but are rarely heard anymore today. I'm glad to have refreshed your memory.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to long time listener, Joel Drucker in Randolph, New Jersey. All the very best to you, Joel and Happy Birthday from the Treasure Island Oldies listeners from all around the world. If you have a birthday coming up, I'd like to help celebrate it with all the Treasure Island Oldies listeners. Send the details of your birthday to birthdays@treasureisdlandoldies.com. I'll then wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play our official birthday song for you, Birthday by The Beatles.

Be sure to check out the new website for MediaOnTap, our online network for the show, at www.mediaontap.com. I am pleased that they are prominently featuring Treasure Island Oldies.

In keeping with our Name Game Special, the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing classic The Name Game by Shirley Ellis. It's our Song of the Week. Oh by the way, if you'd like to sing along with Shirley, I've also included the lyrics. Have fun!

Voice Your Choice features a duo from the British Invasion era, Peter and Gordon, with two of their many hits: Nobody I Know and A World Without Love. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. The winning sing will be played in the 3rd hour of next week's show. Go vote! lol

It brings me back to the transistor radio era all over again! I hope you have a great week and see you next Sunday for the live show.

Bye for now.

Peter And Gordon - Voice Your Choice

Peter and Gordon are Peter Asher and the late Gordon Waller who died July 16, 2009 at the age of 64. The pop duo from London, England burst on the music scene during the height of the British Invasion.

They charted 14 records on the Billboard Hot 100 between May 1964 and June 1967, securing 3 Top Ten singles, with their debut becoming their biggest hit, A World Without Love. After their breakup, Peter Asher became very involved in the music industry in California as both a producer and manager and worked with Linda Ronsadt, James Taylor and 10,000 Maniacs.

This week Treasure Island Oldies spotlights Peter and Gordon on Voice Your Choice with two of their great songs: Nobody I Know and A World Without Love. Which song would you like to hear? Come to Treasure Island Oldies to the Voice Your Choice page and cast your vote. The song with the most votes will be played in Hour 3 of next week's show.

Shirtley Ellis - The Name Game - Song of the Week

In keeping with our Name Game Special this week on Treasure Island Oldies, I thought it would be fun to have a clip of Shirley Ellis performing The Name Game. If you missed the live show, be sure to catch the Archive here, available in Real Media. Here it is then, our Song of the Week.

And to help you sing along, here are the lyrics too.

Gave fun!
Michael

The Name Game - Shirley Ellis

The name game!
Shirley!Shirley, Shirley bo Birley Bonana fanna fo Firley
Fee fy mo Mirley, Shirley!
Lincoln!Lincoln, Lincoln bo Bincoln Bonana fanna fo Fincoln
Fee fy mo Mincoln, Lincoln!
Come on everybody!
I say now let's play a game
I betcha I can make a rhyme out of anybody's name
The first letter of the name, I treat it like it wasn't there
But a B or an F or an M will appear
And then I say bo add a B then I say the name and Bonana fanna and fo
And then I say the name again with an F very plain
and a fee fy and a mo
And then I say the name again with an M this time
and there isn't any name that I can't rhyme

Arnold!
Arnold, Arnold bo Barnold Bonana fanna fo Farnold
Fee fy mo Marnold Arnold!

But if the first two letters are ever the same,
I drop them both and say the name likeBob, Bob drop the B's Bo ob
For Fred, Fred drop the F's Fo red
For Mary, Mary drop the M's Mo ary
That's the only rule that is contrary.

Okay?
Now say Bo: Bo
Now Tony with a B: Bony
Then Bonana fanna fo: bonana fanna fo
Then you say the name again with an F very plain: Fony
Then a fee fy and a mo: fee fy mo
Then you say the name again with an M this time: Mony
And there isn't any name that you can't rhyme

Every body do Tony!
Pretty good, let's do Billy!
Very good, let's do Marsha!
A little trick with Nick!

Country Singer Ferlin Husky Has Died

Country Hall of Famer Ferlin Husky passed away Thursday (March 17) at the age of 86. Ferlin had been hospitalized with breathing trouble in suburban Nashville earlier in the month and at one time was in critical condition. Upon his release he was under hospice care. Ferlin has been hospitalized each of the last two years with pulmonary and cardiac problems. Born in 1925 in Cantwell, Missouri, he served in the Merchant Marines in World War II before returning as a disk jockey in Bakersfield, California. It was there he performed under the name of Terry Preston. He initially recorded under that name for Capitol Records before switching to his real name, but also recorded parody records as Simon Crum. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1955 and moved to Nashville. Ferlin appeared 51 times on the Country charts from 1953-1975. More importantly, six of his songs crossed over to the Pop charts, including "A Dear John Letter" (with Jean Shepard, #4-1953), "Gone (#4-1957) and "Wings Of A Dove" (#12-1960). He was elected to the Country Hall of Fame in 2010.

Ronnie Hammond of Atlanta Rhythm Section Has Died

Ronnie Hammond, lead singer with the Atlanta Rhythm Section beginning in 1972, died Monday (March 14) from a heart attack in a Forsyth, Georgia hospital. He was 60. Ronnie had originally joined Studio One in Doraville, Georgia (where ARS was the house band) as an assistant recording engineer. Discovering he had a great singing voice, he was recruited after the departure of original singer Rodney Justo. Joining for the group's second album, he sang on such hits as "So In To You" (#7-1977), "Imaginary Lover" (#7-1978), "Do It Or Die" (#19-1979) and "Spooky (##17-1979). Ronnie left in 1982 for an unsuccessful solo career but returned in 1988, co-writing most of the tunes on their "Truth In A Structured Form" album. The group was on hiatus during the early '90s but returned in 1995. However in 1998, Ronnie was shot in a confrontation with Macon, Georgia police. He survived, but left ARS in 2001 to join the Voices of Classic Rock tour. Shortly thereafter he retired.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

March 13th, 2011 to March 19th, 2011

This is becoming a habit - albeit a great habit. I am pleased to welcome yet another new station to the Treasure island Oldies Broadcast Partners Network. A big hello and thanks for the invitation to be part of AuroraRocksRadio.com in Aurora, Minnesota. We'll be spending Wednesday afternoons with you from Noon to 4 p.m. How great is that! I am really excited with the continued growth of the show. After almost 14 years, it is so encouraging to see it continuing to build. Thank you very much.

My heart goes out to the families devastated by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. It is not enough to sit back and be complacent. A disaster could strike anywhere at any moment. It's given me cause to think about being more emergency-situation prepared. I hope you will think about it too.

I'd like to extend Happy Birthday wishes to my good friend and long-time listener, Rick Canode in Madison, Wisconsin. All the best to you, Rick, and thanks for your weekly Rock and Roll Relic. It's become a great weekly feature in the 3rd hour of the show.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Ricky Nelson in a clip from his mom and dad's television show, The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet, performing Hello Mary Lou. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice is featuring the kings of the summer surf scene, The Beach Boys with two great songs for your votes this week: Barbara Ann and Darlin'. Cast your vote for the song you'd like me to play at the Voice Your Choice page. I'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

I am having a blast showing friends and colleagues how cool it is to be able to listen to the show via a smartphone, and in my case my iPhone. If you own a smartphone, this is for you. You  can now listen to the live show Sunday nights as well as the Treasure Island Oldies 24/7 Stream on your smartphone (Android,  iPhone or  Windows). Singer Bernard St. Clair Lee of Hues Corporation Has Died

Bernard St. Clair Lee, founding member of the Hues Corporation, was found dead Tuesday (March 8) in his Elsinore, California home. He was 66. No cause of death was given, but police say there are no suspicious circumstances.

Born in 1944 in San Francisco, St. Clair (as he was known) formed the group with Fleming Williams and Hubert Ann Kelley in 1969, performing as backup singers for a variety of vocalists, including Frank Sinatra and Glen Campbell. They were asked to sing three songs in the movie "Blacula," which led to an RCA recording contract. RCA, however, rejected their first choice for a name-- The Children of Howard Hughes.

Their first single, "Freedom For The Stallion" in 1973, did moderately well, reaching #63. But the follow-up,"Rock The Boat," went to #1 the following year and spent 18 weeks on the charts. Next came "Rockin' Soul," which made #21 that year. But two more recordings failed to reach the top 60 and by 1978 they disbanded.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

March 6th, 2011 to March 12, 2011

Last week we welcomed the two latest stations, RAG-FM 107.7 Raglan, New Zealand, as well as BackSpinRadio.net in Edmonton, Alberta, to the Treasure Island Oldies Broadcast Partners Network. This week I am pleased to say that yet another station has joined up. A big hello and welcome to DJsRadio.co.uk in the United Kingdom. We'll be on DJsRadio several times during the week. Be listening Mondays from 8 to 11 a.m., Thursdays between 1 and 4 p.m., then Fridays from 1 to 4 a.m. and once again Sunday from 9 p.m. to midnight. How great is that??!!

It was nice to welcome my old friend Isaac Shane to the studio and the show this week. He was in town from San Diego and it was great getting together. Be sure to check out his show on hitoldies.com Saturdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Eastern.

The Chat Room was busy again this week and it was cool to welcome my old friend Ted Silver, who Isaac and I worked with many years ago at CFOM Quebec City. Al Roberts also joined us and they, along with Isaac, all work at hitoldies.com. We continue to welcome new visitors to the Chat Room every week and we would like to have your company. Just click Chat on the Menu during the live show Sunday nights.

Happy Birthday to Roy Geldart in Campbell River, British Columbia. Roy is a good friend of the show and everyone in the Chat Room. Speaking of Birthdays, I sent a quick email to Paul Evans for his birthday last week and he replied that he didn't think he'd remember it was his birthday were it not for yours truly to send him a note every year. Thanks, Paul

I had no idea that I would be getting so much feedback as a result of playing Money Grabber by Fitz And The Tantrums on the show last week. As I said, I don't normally play new music, as it is an oldies show. But it was so good I had to play it for you. Let me tell you I was very surprised to have a listener leave a comment at the You Tube page for the video of Money Grabber. OnTheWatch said "really must say a big THANK YOU, because it is always a thrill hearing a new band that a) really knows how to play and b) plays really good songs. Heard "Moneygrabber" online in this past weekend's Treasure Island Oldies program and was immediately knocked out. Very cool!!!" Very cool indeed. And one of our Broadcast Partner Network stations, The X Real Rock Variety in Champagne, Illinois sent an email saying "I want to personally thank you for introducing me to Fitz & The Tantrums.  As soon as I heard "MoneyGrabber", I was blown away as well.  Listened to the whole album yesterday, and have put MoneyGrabber in regular rotation even though it's not on any of our weekly MediaBase charts.  It's that good. Thanks again, and hope to hear more from Fitz and more like them! Thanks very much Taylor, great hearing from you. Even California Barb called the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Line to say how much she enjoyed hearing Fitz And The Tantrums. I think I just may have to play it again on the show soon.

My thanks to the tech support staff, and Ross in particular, at our network, Mediaontap, for his quick work of getting our Real Media feed up and running this week, when it was not kicking in. And many thanks to our webmaster, Eddy Fisher, for ensuring we did not lose the archive of the show for your repeat listening. Much appreciated.

WunderRadio is the app you need to buy; and reasonably priced at only $6.99. You can get the app at WunderRadio.com. Here's the link for the live stream: http://meta.insinc.com/treasure/treasure.asx. And this is the link for the 24/7 Stream: http://treasureislandoldies.com/ContinuousTIO_2.asx.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Tower Of Power with their soul classic, So Very Hard To Go. This is a great live performance from Soul Train and it's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice has Creedence Clearwater Revival in the spotlight with two of their many hits: Commotion and Green River. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Let the world know you're a proud listener of Treasure Island Oldies. Send in your name, photo, city and province or state for the Listener Gallery to michael@treasureislandoldies.com and our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, will post it on the Listener Gallery page along with the many already received.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Voice Your Choice

Creedence Clearwater Revival were from El Cerrito, California. With their early "swamp rock" songs such as Born On A Bayou, many mistook them for being from the Bayou itself. CCR first recorded as the Blue Velvets in 1959 on Orchestra Records, then in 1964 they called themselves the Golliwogs and recorded for Fantasy Records. In 1967 they re-named themselves Creedence Clearwater Revival, consisting of John Fogerty (vocals and guitar), his brother Tom Fogerty (guitar), Stu Cook (keyboards and bass) and Doug Clifford (drums). Sadly Tom Fogerty died at age 48 on September 6, 1990 of respiratory failure.

Between 1968 and 1976 CCR appeared on the Billboard charts 20 times, scoring an incredible 9 Top Ten hits, 5 Gold Records, and an additional 5 Platinum Records. The group disbanded in 1972, but that didn't prevent them from having their version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine on the chart four years later in 1976.

John Fogerty went on to a successful solo career, while in the past few years Stu Cook and Doug Clifford have gotten back together to form Creedence Clearwater Revisited.

This week on Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies spotlights Creedence Clearwater Revival with two of their many hits: Commotion and Green River. Which song do you prefer? Come to the Voice Your Choice page and cast your vote. The song with the greatest number of votes will get played in Hour 3 of next week's show.

Tower of Power - Song of the Week

Tower Of Power have had a very long and highly respected career. I saw them in concert a couple of years ago and they were great. Here they are in their prime in a clip from the Soul Train TV show in a live performance.

Here are Tower Of Power with So Very Hard To Go, our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Just In From YouYube

I was surprised and pleased to find a posting by a listener of my Treasure Island Oldies show who posted a comment at the YouTube page for Fits And The Tantrums. Here's what they had to say. Michael

Johnny Preston - Pop Singer - Has Died

Johnny Preston, a protege of the Big Bopper who had three top 40 records, died of heart failure in a Beaumont, Texas hospital Friday (March 4) at the age of 71. He had experienced lingering problems after heart bypass surgery last year.

Born John Preston Courville in 1939 in Port Arthur, Texas, he attended Lamar State College of Technology (now Lamar University) and sang in a group there called the Shades, who performed at the Twilight Club in Port Neches, Texas. It was there in 1957 that Johnny came to the attention of the Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson), who was a DJ at KTRM in Beaumont. The Bopper got Johnny signed to his record label, Mercury, and took him into a Houston recording studio in 1958 to cut a song he had written called "Running Bear" (with fellow Texan George Jones providing the Indian cries). Release of the song was delayed for months after the Bopper's death in a plane crash, but when it was released, it traveled to #1 for three weeks in January of 1960, staying on the charts for 27 weeks. It was followed that year by "Cradle Of Love" (#7) and "Feel So Fine (#14). Though follow-ups were less successful ("Charming Billy" #105-1960, "Leave My Kitten Alone" #73-1961 and "Free Me" #97-1961), Johnny continued to perform all his life, recording for the Imperial, Hallway and Kapp labels.
