Please join me as we celebrate 14 years of Treasure island Oldies Sunday, May 1st from 6 to 10 pm.If you can't make it to hear the live show, then be sure to listen to the Archive during the week.

It's so hard for me to believe that I have been bringing the show to you every week since 1997. In the beginning, the show was heard only on 56k modems and today we are heard in HiFi Stereo Broadband and on nearly 30 AM, FM and Online radio stations around the world. I'm both pleased and proud.

See you on the Island for our 14th Anniversary Special.

Singer Phoebe Snow Has Died

Phoebe Snow, best known for the #5 1975 hit, "Poetry Man," died Tuesday (April 26) from complications of a brain hemorrhage she suffered last year. She was 58. Born Phoebe Laub in New York, she grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and took her stage name from an advertising character who appeared for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. First appearing as a folk artist in Greenwich Village, she was discovered by Shelter Records. Besides "Poetry Man," She also dueted with Paul Simon on "Gone At Last" (#23-1975)-- her only U.S. Pop top 40 hits (mainly due to contractual rifts with Shelter and other labels). Phoebe put her career on hold to take care of her brain-damaged daughter, Valerie, who was born in 1975 and died in 2007. She continued performing until her hemorrhage in January of 2010 when she was planning the release of a new album. She was placed in a medical coma and never really recovered. In 1975, Phoebe was nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy award. She will also be remembered for singing the theme to the NBC-TV show "A Different World" and for the classic "Celebrate the moments of your life" commercial for General Foods International Coffees.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

April 17th, 2011 to April 23rd, 2011

What an interesting theme for the week's mini-special we had on this week's show: Song Titles Not in the Song Lyrics. My thanks to Tom Locke, the creator and writer of our weekly Moment In Time feature, for joining me in the studio and providing great colour commentary throughout the show. Be sure to join me for the next special, our 14th Anniversary Show live Sunday, May 1st, and throughout the week on the archive. It is so hard to believe that the show has been coming to you every week since 1997. It's "the little Internet show that could and did"! :-)

We have reinstated the link for the Real Media Live Stream, as the equipment that went faulty has been repaired. My thanks to the tech department at our Insinc studios. And thanks for your patience and understanding while the problem was being solved. Our Windows Media Live and Archived Streams also sound great and have not been an issue. And if you have a Smartphone, you can listen to both the Windows Media Live and 24/7 Streams. WunderRadio is the app you need to buy; and reasonably priced at only $6.99. You can get the app at WunderRadio.com. Here's the link for the live stream: http://meta.insinc.com/treasure/treasure.asx. And this is the link for the 24/7 Stream: http://treasureislandoldies.com/ContinuousTIO_2.asx.

I was saddened to hear of the death of a long time friend and colleague of mine at A&M Records in Paris. Cathy Oudemans was in charge of Publicity for A&M Europe and she helped us break the artists I had signed to A&M Records including Bryan Adams, The Arrows and many others. She had a great wit and was a consummate professional all the way. We had many good times when we would get together, whether in Paris or Los Angeles. My thoughts go out to Cathy's family at this time. My thanks to Les Pfenninger, the webmaster for the A&M Records Alumni website, for keeping me and my former co-workers at A&M informed.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is keeping with this week's theme of Song Titles Not in the Song Lyrics. We're playing the Bee Gees in a great live concert performance of New York Mining Disaster 1941. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents the very talented Lesley Gore with two of her many hits for your votes this week: Look Of Love and Judy's Turn To Cry. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page and be listening for the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

If you have a birthday coming up, I'd like to help celebrate it with all the Treasure Island Oldies listeners. Send the details of your birthday to birthdays@treasureisdlandoldies.com. I'll then wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play our official birthday song for you, Birthday by The Beatles.

Let the world know you're a proud listener of Treasure Island Oldies. Send in your name, photo, city and province or state for the Listener Gallery to michael@treasureislandoldies.com and our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, will post it on the Listener Gallery page along with the many already received.

You can also let all your friends know you enjoy the show with your personal Treasure Island Oldies Email Signature. A selection of complimentary signatures to be placed at the end of your outgoing emails is available for download. Click Goodies on the upper menu on any page on the website. Thanks to the many folks that have downloaded their own copy of the Email Signature. That's great!

I hope you have a great week and see you next Sunday for the live show.

Bye for now.

Kent Morrill of The Wailers Has Died

Kent Morrill, pianist and singer with The Wailers, died of cancer Friday (April 15) at his home in Tacoma, Washington. He was 70. Formed in 1958 in Tacoma, the band led the way for the Pacific Northwest sound that also gave us the Kingsmen and Paul Revere & the Raiders. In fact, it was the Wailers version of "Louie Louie" (backing Rockin' Roberts) that led both groups to record the song.

The Wailers were known primarily for their instrumentals, however. "Tall Cool One" was a top forty hit in both 1959 and upon its re-release in 1964. And "Mau-Mau" is considered a classic, despite only reaching #68 in 1959. In the past ten years, Kent performed a Roy Orbison tribute when not appearing with the Wailers.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

April 10th, 2011 to April 16th, 2011

If you did not manage to hear the live show this week, be sure to listen to the Archive. You won't want to miss our Annual One Hit Wonders Special. It's amazing how so many great artists and groups could not get another hit after their initial success on the charts. And in a way it is not surprising that there were so many One Hit Wonders. There are probably more one hit wonders than there artists that found repeat success on the charts. One way or the other, it was a pleasure to play so many great songs for you on this week's show. And be sure to listen next week when Tom Locke, the creator and writer of our weekly feature, Moment In Time, will join me in the studio as we will be featuring hit records during the show that did not include the title of the song in the lyrics. Here's a few examples to give you a good idea of what you'll hear: A Lover's Concerto by The Toys, Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, and many more. I'm looking forward to this Great Lyrics - Title Not Included mini-special!

The tech staff at our network have been working on our Real Media feed. We'll be testing it and if all is ok, then we will reinstate the Live stream. Our Windows Media stream continues to work great with no issues. The Archive Real Media stream is also working fine, along with our 24/7 Windows Media feed. Thanks for your patience while they do their best to get the Live Real feed working again.

More folks have begun following me on Facebook again this week including Rich Dodson from The Stampeders, long time listener Joel Drucker, Joanne O'Neill, Johnny Rand, and long time listener Nancy Turnbull and many others. Please join me on Facebook; just click the link on any page of the website. It was also nice to see Nancy come by the Chat Room for a visit during this week's live show Sunday night. You too are very welcome. Click Chat on the Menu and follow the directions.

More comments this week at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Another person has submitted a comment as a follow-up to the post about the death of singer Kenny Dino. "My uncle recently passed away and I was thinking about visiting him and my aunt in Hicksville. I brought my 45 record along with me and my aunt said, do you know that Kenny lives right behind us? (my aunt lived on Winding Rd. and their backyards touched one another. So I walked around the corner to see if I could get a glimpse of him. His mom answered the door and although he wasn't home she gave me all sorts of Kenny Dino swag. I thought I was in R&R heaven. Later on there was a ruckus coming from the backyards and I peeked over the fence and there was Kenny fighting with someone who I think might have been his brother. Well, that made him even cooler in my eyes. Not long ago on David Letterman, Paul and the band played a song and sure enough they were playing Your Ma Said You Cried in Your Sleep Last Night. ah memories." And Simon Crum also commented about the Ferlin Husky post, "RIP Ferlin aka Simon Crum. I have one of your 45s (Drinkin' Man) on my wall at home. Wish I knew why you chose my real name as your pseudonym. Thanks for the music." Thanks very much for the great comments. Anytime you read something at the Blog that inspires you to respond, please do so. I look forward to hearing from you.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing When I Die by Motherlode, a great One Hit Wonder. I just love this song and I know you will find it a treat seeing this rare video. It's our One Hit Wonder Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice spotlights Canada's folk poet, Gordon Lightfoot, with two of his many hit songs for your votes: If You Could Read My Mind and Sundown. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

It brings me back to the transistor radio era all over again! I'm having a blast showing friends and colleagues how cool it is to be able to listen to the show via a smartphone, and in my case my iPhone. If you own a smartphone, this is for you. You  can now listen to the live show Sunday nights as well as the Treasure Island Oldies 24/7 Stream on your smartphone (Android,  iPhone or  Windows). WunderRadio is the app you need to buy; and reasonably priced at only $6.99. You can get the app at WunderRadio.com. Here's the link for the live stream: http://meta.insinc.com/treasure/treasure.asx. Gordon Lightfoot - Voice Your Choice

Gordon Lightfoot was born on November 17, 1938 in Orillia, Ontario and became one of the most respected songwriters of the folk music era. Many of his songs have been recorded by other artists, one example being Peter, Paul & Mary, who had a big hit with Early Mornin' Rain. Early in his career, having honed his writing and singing in Toronto's Yorkville district in the '60s, he recorded for Chateau Records and later with United Artists. For a long time he was managed by a music industry colleague of mine, Al Mair.

This week on Voice Your Choice we focus on two of his later recordings for Reprise Records:  If You Could Read My Mind (Top 5 hit)and Sundown ( #1 Gold record). Which song do you prefer? Come to the Treasure Island Oldies Voice Your Choice page and make your selection. The song with the most votes will be played during Hour 3 of next week's show.

Motherlode - One Hit Wonder Song of the Week

Motherlode were a pop R&B group from Toronto, Ontario. The members were the great William "Smitty" Smith on vocals and keyboards, Kenny Marco on guitar, the amazing Steve Kennedy on sax, and Wayne Stone on drums. Sadly Smitty died of a heart attack at the young age of 53 on December 1, 1997.

They gave us a terrific slice of soul with When I Die, our Song of the Week, and a perfect song for our One Hit Wonders annual special this week on Treasure Island Oldies.

Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

April 3rd, 2011 to April 9th, 2011

It was good to be back home in Vancouver and in time for this week's show. Many thanks for your email requests once again this week. When you are requesting a song, please remember this show plays the hits from the '50s to the '70s. And all the hits that appeared on the Top 100 charts. I don't play non-hit album cuts on the show. It's been that way since we started back in 1997.

We continue to be experiencing technical difficulties with our live Real Media stream. Until it is resolved, the LIVE Real MediaStream will NOT be available. However, the Archive Real Media will continue to be available the day after the live show. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Wow new Facebook friends continue every week, with recent new friends Bobby Rydell, Lynne Erin Flanery, Dale F. Abbott, Christine Vitale, Dennis M. Nardone, Gary Sabourin. George J Ward, Albert Miller, and so many more. Follow me on Facebook. Click the Facebook logo and link on any page of the website.

There have been some interesting comments posted recently at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Regarding the post about the death of the lead singer of the Hues Corporation, Bernard St. Claire Lee, John Cook wrote: "Sorry to hear of the passing of Bernard St. Clair Lee I worked with his father Otis Henderson in the earlier 1970s when the Hues Corporation recorded "Rock The Boat I remember how proud his father was of him R.I.P" And further to the post about Dorothy Jones of The Cookies: "Just thought you might like to know, Margaret Ross sings with Barbara Harris as one of "The Toys". Barbara has also put together The Cookies" featuring Margaret's Ross. They can be reached through Barbara's website
www.barbarastoys.net".
I invite you to leave a comment on any posting at the Blog.

Next week on the show it's our Annual One Hit Wonders Special. Boy, will you ever be surprised by some of the songs you'll hear. Many artists were never able to repeat the success they had with their first hit record. Oh sure, they more than likely released more 45s, but they were never able to achieve another hit. And we'll spotlight those artists throughout the show next week.

The following week on the live show on April 17, Tom Locke, the creator and writer of our weekly feature, Moment In Time, will join me in the studio as we feature have a mini-special, Great Lyrics - Title Not Included. These will be hit records that did not include the song title in the lyrics. This will be fun!

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the late great Gene Pitney with Town Without Pity. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice features two songs by The Beatles from possibly my favourite Beatles album, Beatles 65 (Beatles For Sale in the UK). I hope there is a tie, cause it would be hard for me to choose between No Reply and I'll Be Back. However, you have to vote, not me. LOL Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. The wining song will get played in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

It brings me back to the transistor radio era all over again! I'm having a blast showing friends and colleagues how cool it is to be able to listen to the show via a smartphone, and in my case my iPhone. If you own a smartphone, this is for you. I hope you have a great week and see you next Sunday for the live show.

Bye for now.

The Beatles - Voice Your Choice

I remember Christmas 1965 and getting Beatles '65 as a gift from my sister, Louise. And it was in Stereo! Some critics complained that the stereo mix had too much echo. To me it added to the energy of the performances and made the songs sound larger than life. I love hearing the original North American stereo mixes of that album to this day. In some ways, this is my favourite album by the Fab Four.

This week on Voice Your Choice we present John, Paul, George and Ringo - The Beatles with two of their many great songs from Beatles '65: No Reply and I'll Be Back. Which song would you like to hear?

Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Gene Pitney - Song of the Week

Gene Pitney had such a distinctive sounding voice. You may not have known a new song by him, but you sure would know his voice instantly. Here is a great example of a great Gene Pitney hit.

This week the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Gene Pitney and Town Without Pity. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!!
