Bing Crosby - Voice Your Choice

In many ways, Christmas is Bing Crosby. I'll never tire of watching Holiday Inn and how amazing it must have been to be seeing it for the first time in the movie theatre and hearing White Christmas.

I can't imagine how stirring that must have been. It sure made an indelible impression on people for generations to come.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Bing Crosby. with  and Jingle Bells. Cast you vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Happy Holidays or It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. I'll play the winning song on the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Sam And Dave - I Thank You - Song of the Week

I recognition of our American friends celebrating Thanksgiving this week, here's Sam and Dave with I Thank You. It's our Song of the Week.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Motown's Jimmy Ruffin Has Died

Jimmy Ruffin, the first in a long series of singers to record the soul staple “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” died Monday at his home in Las Vegas, according to The Associated Press. He was 78 years old.

“Brokenhearted” was originally written for Ruffin’s fellow Motown signees The Spinners, but he convinced the label’s in-house songwriters to give it to him instead. In 1966, he sent the song into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, the only song of his career to chart that high. In 1970 he teamed up to record with his brother David, a member of The Temptations, and in 1980 he had the second big hit of his career with the Robin Gibbs-produced “Hold On to My Love.”

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of November 16th, 2014

November 16th, 2014 to November 22nd, 2014

Howdy y’all! :-) Wow was that ever fun to play all those great all-time classic country tunes on the Pop Goes The Country Special this week on Treasure Island Oldies. It didn’t matter if it was the ‘50s, ‘60s’ or the ‘70s, when a country record became huge it often “crossed over” from the country charts to the Pop charts, and at times to other charts as well, such as the rhythm and blues and adult contemporary charts.  Now THAT is the power of great music! And I very much appreciate that you too love great music and country music as well. I’m so pleased with the response I have already received from this week’s show. Several listeners indicated they thought it was actually one of the best specials ever on the show. Thank you very much! And there will be more specials too. Our last special show will be this year’s Annual Christmas Special. The show will be Live Sunday, December 21st and on the Archive throughout the rest of the Christmas Holiday Season.

And get ready for 2015 when we will celebrate the 18th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies. More details soon…

Best wishes and Happy Birthday to long time listener of the show and good friend of mine and the folks in the Chat Room, Connie Canode, in Madison, Wisconsin. In addition, I’d like to say Happy Birthday to my nephew Andrew Gize in Gatineau, Quebec, and to J.P. Guilbert, in St. Maarten in the Caribbean. I had the great pleasure to work with J.P. during my almost 11 years with A&M Records. If your birthday is coming up soon, please be sure to let me know. It would be my pleasure to wish you all the best on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is continuing with the Pop Goes The Country theme by playing a great live performance of Patsy Cline singing Crazy. It’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice returns again next week with The Byrds. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Eight Miles High or Mr. Tambourine Man. I’ll play the winner during the 3rd hour of next week’s show.

The Byrds, James McGuinn (he legally changed his name to Roger McGuinn in 1968), David Crosby, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, and Mike Clarke, were formed in Los Angeles.

Their first hit single was written by Bob Dylan. When they recorded Mr. Tambourine Man, Roger McGuinn was the only member of the group considered good enough to play on the recording date, so session players were called in to lay down the tracks. Those session players eventually became known as The Wrecking Crew.By the way, the documentary movie, The Wrecking Crew, is going to finally have national distribution to theatres in 2015. What good news that is and one movie you must add to your list of must see films.

Treasure Island Oldies presents The Byrds on Voice Your Choice. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Eight Miles High  or  Mr. Tambourine Man. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Patsy Cline - Crazy - Song of the Week

This week Treasure Island Oldies featured all country songs on the show with the Pop Goes The Country Special. And keeping with the theme, here's the amazing Patsy Cline with a live performance of one of her signature songs, Crazy. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

November 9th, 2014 to November 15th, 2014

It was great to spend another 4 hours together listening to great music, as we do every week on Treasure Island Oldies. And next week be sure to listen for the Pop Goes The Country Special. You’ll hear from   artists such as Lynn Anderson, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Jimmy Dean, Mac Davis, and so many, many more. It all starts next Sunday, November 16th at 6 pm Pacific, 1 am Universal. I think this is only the 2nd time since I’ve been doing this show that this theme is returning as a special. See ya’ll next week on the Island as Pop Goes the Country!

I’d like to extend my best wishes and congratulations to my good friend Red Robinson who this week is celebrating his 60th Anniversary of being on the radio. This Rock & Roll Hall of Fame DJ has been recognized by many other organizations over the years including the Canadian Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Red, any many more years of gracing the airwaves with your personality.
